Phil Donaldson - Fort Collins Musician, Singer & Composer

I’m a Fort Collins musician who fuses R&B, Pop, Rock, Funk, and Jazz — blending the soul of Classic Motown with the inventiveness of David Bowie. As a singer, keyboardist, composer, arranger, and producer, I aim straight for the human heart to create memorable musical experiences.

I’ve had the joy of sharing the stage with the FoCo Motown Revue (a band I manage featuring Peaches Embry, Carlton Pride and Julia Kirkwood), West Side Joe & The Men of Soul, John Magnie, Steve Amadee, Hugh Ragin, Joyful Noise Gospel Ensemble, and The Symbols (I also helped out with background vocals on their last album), among others.

Music, for me, is more than performance — it’s a way to entertain, comfort, heal, and inspire. Whether in a living room house concert or on a concert stage, I bring a sense of conscious, creative fun to every show.

My life began in Los Angeles, surrounded by a wide range of sounds. When I first heard Stevie Wonder’s Music Of My Mind, I was awakened to the magic of synthesizers, the power of the recording studio and the singer/songwriter/producer aesthetic.

Thus began my desire to make music.

Later, the work of Todd Rundgren and Brian Eno deepened my drive to follow the path of a true musical craftsman.

My musical evolution began taking shape at Interlochen Arts Academy/National Music Camp and continued at McGill University’s electronic music studio, where I learned to use classic analog synthesizers, building original compositions and sonic environments.

Eventually, I moved to New York City, performing with bands, as a cabaret act and in theater productions, while also composing and arranging for theater, video, and church worship (co-producing a church CD project and contributing arrangements for a Spanish language Christmas CD).

An experience of note was co-writing a contemporary version of “Who Is Silvia?” and performing it for a contemporized production of Shakespeare's “Two Gentlemen Of Verona.”

I currently provide voice work for KRFC 88.9 FM Radio Fort Collins and have served on the board for Sound Affects (as well as performed as a Sound Affects artist). It's also been my pleasure to serve as a co-organizer for Founded In FoCo, starting the Nonprofit Track, Creative Track and ScaleUp Day.

I also helped establish Fort Collins Juneteenth Celebration, serving on the Entertainment Committee. Community service has been part of my DNA.

In recent years, I've performed at FoCoMX, Taste of Fort Collins, City of Fort Collins 4th of July Celebration, FoCo Juneteenth Celebration, Founded In FoCo, Imaginate! and various private events.

And check it out, I've performed in some pretty cool venues:

  • Washington's
  • The Armory
  • Avogadro's Number
  • Foothills Mall
  • The Lyric
  • FoCo Senior Center
  • Confluence Park (Denver)
  • Fort Collins City Park
  • Rolland Moore Park

If you're looking and booking, reach out and let's discuss. I'm up for gettin' down at your next event!

Community radio matters. KRFC 88.9 FM amplifies Fort Collins artists, stories, and culture — giving local talent the stage and our community the soundtrack. I'm proud to be a volunteer.
